I spent the day researching glycolic acid and the significance of pH adjusters. I know, right? This girl is LIVING THE DREAM! The day-dream of my youthful skin glory days; that time of life when my skin didn’t have fine lines or wrinkles and require annoying maintenance like daily cleansing and make-up. Alas, there is no rest for the weary in the pursuit of the fountain of youth.

In order that I justify my internet binge of the day, I will share my findings. I’m a generous person.

For the lazy reader, I’ll cut to the chase: THE pH BALANCE OF YOUR SKIN IS ACTUALLY A BIG DEAL. For the rest of you, please continue reading below….

Most of us understand the benefits of exfoliating.* Some have heard of glycolic acid as a powerful exfoliant used by spas & dermatologists. But, how many of us realize glycolic acid is also a pH adjuster? And, why should we care?

As it turns out, if we want to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, even-out our skin tone, soften, and smooth our skin; we should care a lot about pH. Optimal pH range for your skin is 4–5.5, (slightly acidic). A pH level that is too alkaline or too acidic may cause a variety of skin conditions including dermatitis, moderate to severe acne, eczema, accelerated signs of aging, and rosacea.

Moreover, pH is integral to supporting the proper healthy functioning of the acid mantle; a naturally occurring thin protective barrier of fatty acids and secretions from sweat and oil glands.

The acid mantle is known to:

 Protect against the negative impact of pollutants, free radicals, dust, etc.
 Keep skin soft and supple
 Minimize cracks and abrasions
 Prevent harmful bacteria & viruses from entering the blood stream
 Boost the immune system

Lifestyle, diet, environmental factors, and your age all impact the pH balance of our skin. Everything that comes in contact with skin (air contaminants, water, sun, cosmetics and skin care products), can impact the delicate acid mantle. Additionally, the amount of oil or sebum naturally produced by our skin decreases as we age. However, when we are aware of our optimal pH level and our acid mantle, there are things we can do to improve or maintain the skin’s healthy, youthful glow.

1. Protect your skin from the sun: use moisturizers and make-up that contain an SPF to protect from sun damage.
2. Hydrate yourself from the inside out by drinking half your body weight in ounces, ( 140 lbs = 70 oz water/day)
3. Commit to a skin-care line based on your skin type to ensure you are getting the proper balance of
vitamins, minerals, pH adjustment, SPF and moisture, (one size does not fit all).
4. Read labels and become educated on the products you use.
5. Look for skin-care and cosmetics that contain topical antioxidants (vitamins A, C, E, and green tea)**. Antioxidants promote a healthy acid mantle by fortifying and protecting cells from environmental stresses and oxidation.
6. Cleanse your face twice a day. Washing too frequently, or not often enough, will also cause disruptions in the acid mantle.
7. Avoid the use of cleansers containing sodium laureth sulfate; which can be very drying and irritating to the skin due to it’s high alkalinity.
8. Exfoliate regularly. All people’s dead skin cells layer themselves like shingles on your face. Dead skin cells are dull in complexion, may trap bacteria close to the skin, increase the chances of clogged pores and breakouts, and also interfere with product absorption. Meanwhile, exfoliation removes dead, dull skin cells to reveal brighter, younger, healthy skin.
