If there is one thing that drives me crazy, and believe me there are actually many, it is when people define themselves by what they are not. I often hear people say; “Oh, I don’t run,” or “I don’t lift weights,” “I’m too old to do Insanity,” “I don’t think I can do a spin class,” “I’m too out of shape to go to a boot camp,” “I don’t cook,” “I’m not a morning person.” All of that is crap. Never define yourself by what you are not. If someone told you couldn’t, were absolutely not allowed or able to do something: how would you react? I bet it would piss you off. So why do you do you put limits on yourself?

Trying something you’ve never done before is intimidating, I get it. Every time I serve a new meal, my children are resistant. The same conversation ensues:

Child: “I don’t like this, I’m not eating it.”
Me: “Its dinner and it’s all you’re getting.”
Child: “But I don’t like it!”
Me: “You’ve never had it before so you don’t know if you like it, try it.”

Child reluctantly eats it and then most of the time has to admit that it’s actually pretty good. There is the also familiar conversation when my children have already tried a particular food and they didn’t like it. Yet, I always insist that they take at least one bite of it every time it is served because honest to God, tastes change.

That is true with everything in life. So, you ran once and you got shin splints. Well, maybe you had the wrong shoes, maybe your form was off, or maybe it just wasn’t your time. You lifted and you hated it. Maybe you were at the wrong gym, maybe you didn’t have a well thought out plan, and maybe you should have been in a class or with a trainer or using free weights verse machines. Too old? Too out of shape? Oh give me a flippin’ break! Everyone has to start somewhere! Put your big girl/boy pants on and get at it. You don’t cook? Well heck you love food and cooking isn’t hard. Plan basic meals and learn to eat right. You are not a morning person? Well, neither was I but I must admit it’s pretty incredible to be out for a run and watch the sun rise over the neighborhood, or to have a bathroom clean and laundry folded before leaving the house for the office, or how about a quiet cup of coffee and a magazine before the kids get up? Heaven…. An open mind and motivation is all you need.

Change is by nature difficult. However, doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result is total insanity. If you want something new, you HAVE to change what you do. The best you is just a couple good decisions away.

I admit I was the kid that always took the “double dog dare.” I have always tested limits including every single one my parents set during my teen years, (I’ll pay for that with at least one of my four children I’m sure). Got a challenge? I’ll take it. But still, it simply doesn’t make sense to define yourself as what you’re not. What are you? What do you want to be? Who is the you that still wants to make an appearance in this world? What are your dreams?

Only you can answer those questions, but I’ll tell you who I am…. I am a wife and a very proud mother. I am an avid reader. I enjoy yoga, spin, running, time at the gym and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to hate Shaun T of Insanity and my boot camp trainer. I like to cook. I have a sweet tooth the size of Texas. I work hard and I play hard. And I am always willing to try something new because I’m still figuring out who I am.
